Advanced Concepts in Functional Capacity Evaluation
This Advanced FCE course with Ralph Cheesman is designed to encourage you to analyze your current habits and perspectives within your FCE methodologies. The course will be both provocative and collaborative in nature, challenging participants to express their knowledge and opinions pertaining to critical aspects of FCE testing while considering direction from available research literature and other colleagues. This course will assist your growth and potentially change your practice!
Learning Outcomes
- Determine statistical thresholds for effort analysis based on sound understanding and debate of the available research literature.
- Improve the validity of your FCE and thus improve the defensibility and ultimately the utility of your opinions.
- Consider the pitfalls when framing work tolerance frequencies and improve methodology to better defend your metrics.
- Review your use and the clinical relevancy of Repetitive Movement Tests. Are these really the best repeat metrics to determine work place tolerances?
- Refresh or challenge your clinical view pertaining to pain and its influence on function. Consider whether you are effectively measuring, analyzing, and convincingly illuminating your opinion pertaining to the reliability of a client’s pain reports
- Examine the available literature pertaining to safe lifting. Are you intervening with lift testing prematurely?
- Discuss and develop strategies to handle a difficult client and report on such in a manner that has clinical balance and relevancy.
- Learn to incorporate work simulation in your testing methodology. Yes it takes more work, however, it is more creative, meaningful, and convincing.
- Develop a critique path to best address deficiencies in case work and ultimately your own work!
- Develop and practice strategies to manage common cross examination challenges.
Who Should Attend
This course requires participants to have completed entry level FCE training followed by delivery of FCE services in clinical practice. It is designed to stimulate critical analysis of fundamental tenets of FCE testing using experience and layered perspective (familiarization with research literature and multiple clinical permutations).
This is a high-level course. It is intended for evaluators who have completed the Matheson FCE Certification Program and/or all experienced clinicians who work in the field of disability.
Educational Level
Health clinicians with at least a bachelor’s degree and familiarity with reading and evaluating research literature.

Workshop Hours
Registration on the first day is from 8 – 8:30 a.m.
Subsequent day begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break at 12 noon and two 15 minute breaks around 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
